In September 2010 my Mum underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant at the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children after nearly 15 years battling a blood condition which mutated into Myelofibrosis in 2007. After a lengthy search a match was found for Bone Marrow donation. Luckily, thanks to the research that goes on at the unit and the advances in the drugs used my Mum was entitled to the transplant as only a few years prior to this the cut off age was 50 (Mum was born in 1958). The unit relies on donations from the public to provide additional support for the patients and their families including; an apartment for use while the patient is an “In Patient” so that family and friends can stay close, an overnight hotel for the people travelling distances to attend full day Bone Marrow Work Up appointments prior to being admitted to the unit, freshly prepared and cooked on premises’ food that is suitable for people who are Immunosuppressant patients. Although the Unit is within the Children’s hospital, 50% of the patients who are treated here are adults. The unit treats people from all over the world and are pioneers in the research they do. Most of the doctors who work on this ward are specialised in a particular area of Bone Marrow Transplants.
